Dr. Stephen Hampson - Chief Executive Officer , Management Team

Stephen has a strong track record of working with technology start-ups, helping to create a number of successful companies. He has substantial hands-on experience leading companies in both Europe and New Zealand. His experience with New Zealand start-ups spans eight years and more than 30 ventures, while he has been the Chief Executive of Canterbury Innovation Incubator. Stephen graduated from the University of Canterbury with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1995. This was followed by post-doctoral study at Bath University in the UK.

Miles Hockley - Senior Partner, Management Team

Miles has over 25 years of management experience in IP commercialisation, technology start-ups, strategic management consultancy and international finance. A metallurgist by degree, Miles has been involved operationally with a number of early stage businesses and has experience of building and managing strategic alliances internationally and the raising of equity from private, institutional and corporate investors. Miles graduated from Trinity College, Oxford University with BA Honours in 1979 and MA Honours in 1985.

Tim Chapman - Venture Partner, Management Team

Tim was the General Manager of a corporate technology spin-out, which successfully negotiated a license for the technology to the world leading company based in Italy. He also has significant general management experience in manufacturing and supplying of products throughout Australasia. Tim graduated from the University of Canterbury with a BCom in Accountancy, Business Administration and Economics. In 1998, he completed an MBA, also at the University of Canterbury.

Jane Hill - Venture Partner, Management Team

Jane is a technology entrepreneur, founding her own software start-up in 2000. The company, which developed generic configuration management software for mobile telecommunications network operators, came from experience working for the UK’s leading mobile operator. Jane has also developed research-based software, having worked for five years at NIWA - her Crown Research Institute experience and linkages invaluable. Jane has a first class double honours degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Otago, and is currently nearing completion of her MBA.

Stuart Whitham - Chief Financial Officer, Management Team

Stuart brings to powerHouse his international experience working with young growth companies on audits, cash flow modelling and insolvency projects, financial instrument valuation, fund management and financial control. Stuart qualified as a Chartered Accountant at Coopers & Lybrand (now PWC) in London, working with global financial institutions on the valuation of derivative financial instrument portfolios. After making a permanent move to Christchurch in 2004, Stuart took up a role with global fund of funds, Infiniti Group, before later becoming Financial Controller at Allied Telesis.

Anya Hornsey - IP Rights Manager, Management Team

Anya’s key focus is developing IP strategy for Powerhouse portfolio companies. She also conducts due diligence on potential clients,checking freedom-to-operate and the strength of any existing IP position. Anya oversees the full patenting process.As Commercial Manager, her combined role also includes: bookkeeping, process management for investment deals, and investment deal completion. Anya has a BA in Languages from UC which she completed in 1989 followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from Massey in 2002.

Simone Gale - Incubator Manager, Management Team

Simone joined powerHouse in 2010. Before that, she successfully led the 2009 University of Canterbury Entrepreneurship Challenge (entré) as CEO, supporting and guiding dozens of young entrepreneurs. She graduated the same year with a First Class Honours in Diplomacy and International Relations, as well as an LLB and a Masters of International Law.
